Wellington Roast Battle Championship

Rules

Respect Comes First!

Every competitor enters the battle willingly and agrees to be roasted. Keep it funny, keep it consensual, and remember that the goal is laughter—not harm.

Roast the Comic, Not the Crowd

Jokes should be directed at your opponent. Avoid targeting audience members, venue staff, judges, or volunteers unless it's part of approved crowd interaction.

No Hate Speech

Material that targets protected characteristics or promotes hatred or discrimination isn't permitted.

This includes (but isn't limited to):

  • Race or ethnicity
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender identity
  • Disability
These topics can sometimes be part of a roast if handled thoughtfully and aimed at the individual rather than the group—but organisers and judges have the final say on what's acceptable.

Keep It Original

Write your own jokes. Plagiarism or knowingly using another comedian's material may result in immediate disqualification.

No Physical Contact

No pushing, grabbing, throwing objects, damaging property, or unwanted touching. The battle stays verbal.

No Props or Costumes

Roast Battle is about writing and performance.

Unless a themed event specifically allows it:

  • No props
  • No costumes
  • No visual aids
  • No sound effects or pre-recorded audio

Stay Within the Time Limit

Each round has a fixed time or number of jokes. Going over time may result in penalties or losing the round.

Respect the Result

Judges' decisions are final. Win with humility, lose with grace.

Look After Each Other

If your opponent has a concern about a topic before the battle, respect that conversation. Great roast battles happen because both comics trust each other.
